Hi everyone! I'm Kimberly Phyfe, the smile behind the camera.
If you enjoy working with a photographer who feels more like a friend, who makes you laugh, captures your natural expressions, and puts you at ease with positive energy and tons of enthusiasm, I'm just the girl for you!
Located on Long Island, New York!
Because I get asked this all the time: Phyfe is pronounced Fife ... like the fife & drum band!
Phyfe Photography captures genuine connections between couples, parents, grandparents, siblings, and babies.
I specialize in making women feel strong and beautiful in their own skin, highlighting their joy while looking at their loved ones, building their businesses, or starting a new chapter in their lives.
I encourage confidence and comfort, play over poses, and authenticity over awkwardness.
My story starts in November 2017 when I lost a job I loved.
A job I had given hours and hours of my life to working tirelessly, and commuting endlessly.
A job I went back to after my baby was born, only for them to demand more of my precious time, more of my depleting energy, and offer me less money in return.
The motherhood tax is real, y’all!
When it came time for them to face a budget crunch, I was laid off and heartbroken. The insult to injury was worse when only two weeks after losing my position, my then 7 month old son was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.
By his second birthday, James was further diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum.
Wanting to celebrate James’s milestones (delayed though they may be), I could not find a photographer to work with us.
No one knew how to work with Special Needs children, or quite frankly, seemed to want to.
No one had the time, the patience, the energy to take on an Autistic client.
No one would give a longer session to allow for snacks and snuggles and sensory processing.
No one could keep up with James, capture his spirit, get him to smile.
Most photographers want children to sit still, look at the camera, pose, and smile.
My son - like so many other Special Needs children - cannot - will not - do any of those things.
I became the photographer I needed when he was little.
I created a community of Special Needs Parents who want, need, and deserve priceless images of precious moments with their children. Whether that child has a mobility issue, needs an accessible location, has to be held the whole session, needs space to run and play between shots, has to listen to Baby Shark on repeat the entire session, or just needs the time to warm up to a new setting, I can do that.
My motivation is to capture an image that when a Mom or Dad sees it, their first reaction is “There! That’s my kid!” Not just their smile … but their spirit.
The challenge lies in encouraging mothers to get in the picture with their children, entrepreneurs to build their business around their personal brand, and couples to feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.
Not when they’ve lost another 5 or 10 pounds.
Not when they’ve gotten fresh highlights.
Not when they’re wearing a designer outfit.
Not when they’ve gotten their teeth fixed.
Not when they’ve toned their arms or their legs or their tummy.
Now. Right now. Exactly as we are.
1) I'm a mama bear to 5 year old James who is currently obsessed with dinosaurs, space, and tractors.
2) There's a very good chance that at this exact moment, stuck in my head is the Paw Patrol / PJ Masks / Daniel Tiger / Sesame Street theme song.
3) I love baking and challenge myself to learn a new skill every year. So far, I've mastered madeleines, macarons, and biscotti.
4) I am currently learning American Sign Language and welcome Deaf families.
5) I love walking, especially with my hubby and son. We aim for 30 miles in 30 days. Bonus points for hiking trails, nature walks, beach combing, and waterfalls!
6) Starbucks is my love language. Venti French Vanilla Chai with oat milk and light ice pretty please!
7) I am a serious bookworm. I won the summer reading contest at the library every year as a kid...and this year as an adult! If you need reading recommendations, I'm your girl.
8) PBS is my station of choice and period dramas make my heart happy! If you'd like to catch up on Call the Midwife or wax poetic about Downton Abbey, please call me!
9) James has Cerebral Palsy and is on the Autism Spectrum. Being a family photographer allows me to be a Work From Home Mom during his many, many therapies a week, while still getting out and meeting wonderful people like YOU! I love the creative freedom, connections to awesome families I get to photograph, and being able to provide meaningful income while not sacrificing time with my munchkin. See more about his story on the Special Needs tab <3
10) My hubby's great grandfather was Duncan Phyfe, the famous Scottish / American furniture maker. His work is in the White House, the New American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the New York Historical Society.
